Getting to Tromsø
Tromsø Airport Langnes is a modern, well-functioning airport. There are more than 10 daily flights from Tromsø to Oslo, and the flying time is less than two hours. There are also direct flights to London Stansted, Murmansk and Stockholm. From Tromsø, you can also fly to Svalbard (Spitsbergen).
Tromsø lies north of the Scandinavian rail network, but the stations in Narvik, Fauske and Rovaniemi can be reached by long-distance bus. From Oslo, there is a 30-hour train/bus connection to Tromsø. The travelling time from Stockholm through Sweden is around 24 hours. From Helsinki, the 24-hour bus/train combination operates only during summer.
The famous Hurtigruten (The Norwegian Coastal Voyage) sails from Bergen, via Trondheim and Bodø, to Tromsø.
You can also drive your own car. A 1,600-kilometre long highway, which remains open all year, connects Tromsø with Oslo. Driving time is approximately 30 hours.
Getting around Tromsø and Lyngen
The city of Tromsø is compact, and can be easily explored on foot and by using the efficient city bus network. The airport, a mere 10 minutes from the city centre, is well-served by the airport express bus, city buses and taxis.
A network of safe and comfortable buses and express boats connects Tromsø with the municipality of Lyngen, as well as most surrounding rural areas. However, due to the low population density, the number of departures is limited, and travelling should be planned ahead.
Hiring a car is a good idea.
Travelling to other destinations in Northern Norway
Tromsø is the perfect starting point from which to explore the rest of Northern Norway. Buses, express boats and aircraft fan out from Tromsø to every point of interest in Norway’s far north. However, due to the low population density, the number of departures is limited, and travelling should be planned ahead.
