Festivals in Trondheim

From the end of July to the start of August every year, the city celebrates the St. Olav's Festival, Norway's largest church and cultural festival. Trondheim Jazz Festival, Kosmorama International Film Festival, Trondheim Chamber Music Festival and Nidaros Blues Festival are other annual, international festivals.

Festivals and plays outside Trondheim

Hell Music Festival (30 kilometres north of Trondheim), Storåsfestivalen (74 kilometres south of Trondheim) and Molde International Jazz Festival (220 kilometres southwest of Trondheim).

During the summer outdoor plays and operas are very popular. The most famous are Korsvikaspelet (every second year, next time in 2008), the St. Olav Drama at Stiklestad (120 kilometres north for Trondheim) and Olav Engelbrektsson – a midnight opera at Steinvikholm (50 kilometres north of Trondheim).

Sports and leisure

Trondheims’s football team Rosenborg Ballklubb (RBK), has been the most winning football team in Norway for the last 20 years - winning 20 league championships and nine cup championships. The team has several times qualified to play in the Champions League.

Outdoor activities

Summer as winter, Bymarka entices you with the beauty and variety of its countryside. There is a varied and well developed network of trails.

Walking trails

Ladestien (approximately 14 kilometres) goes along the coast of the Lade peninsula. Nidelvstien along the river Nidelven.

Fishing

The Nidelven River is one of Norway’s best salmon and trout rivers. Most fishing locations are open to the public. Some stretches are even free.

The Trampe bicycle lift

Trondheim is the first city in the world with a lift specifically designed for cyclists. The bicycle lift, developed in Trondheim, goes up the steep hill at Brubakken near Gamle Bybro, and it takes you from the bridge and almost all the way up to the Kristiansten Fort.

For test-runs, you need a lift card and a bike. The lift card is available at the tourist information office or Sykkelbua and Dromedar Kaffebar at the starting point of the lift. Further information about the cycle lift is available at the starting point.
